Source A : An excerpt from Arthur Young’s Travels in France (1787–1789)：

"The abuses of the tax system bear heavily upon the lower classes. The taille (land tax)
and the corvée (forced unpaid labor) are exacted exclusively from the peasantry, while the
nobility and clergy—who own the vast majority of the land—enjoy sweeping exemptions.
One is left to wonder how long a starving population will bear the crushing weight of royal
extravagance at Versailles and the idle privileges of a parasitic aristocracy.”
